Some Hiking Trails Opened By New York

After the hiking trails were closed due to Hurricane Irene, some are opening up now.
Now that the worst is over the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has opened up most of the hiking trails for travelers. The hiking trails have been opened up in the Adirondack High Peaks region which was hit hard by Irene.
But they are advising people to be careful and not go hiking because most of the trails have been damaged. A list is constantly being updated in the DEC website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/public/76659.html. In the Adirondacks region, some hiking trails like the eastern zone of the High Peaks Wilderness and Giant Mountain Wilderness areas were re-opened. Dix Mountain Wilderness area and a few other hiking trails in the areas will remain closed. They also said that hikers should be prepared to face flooding, washouts etc and may have to return if the conditions go out of hand.
